Based on the theory of the traditional Chinese medicine, Qi (气) flows in the Meridian system to deliver the life-force, or energy, to each element of the human body. Along each meridian, there are Qi points, or acupuncture points (穴位), that can be manipulated to restore balance. Stimulating these points by thumb/ finger pressure or needles is the basic technique of therapeutic massage, acupuncture and acupressure.

Qi Point: Yongquan (涌泉)

Yongquan point is on the bottom of the foot. Horizontally it is located in the middle of the sole, about 3 inches from the base of the toes. Yongquan point is the well point, or the beginning point, of the Foot-Shaoyin-Kidney-Meridian (足少阴肾经).

Stimulating Yongquan point can help for chronic fatigue, headache, vision blurring, sore throat, voice loss, epilepsy (children), schizophrenia, and loss of consciousness.

Qi Point: Taixi (太溪)

Taixi point is in the middle of the depression between the high point of the ankle bone and the Achilles tendon. It is the third Qi point of the Foot-Shaoyin-Kidney-Meridian (足少阴肾经).

Stimulating Taixi point helps for headache, dizziness, sore throat, toothache, tinnitus, hearing loss, cough, asthma, and memory loss.

Qi Point: Sanyinjiao (三阴交)

Sanyinjiao point is about 3 inches above the ankle bone and on the tibial side of the trailing edge. It is the 6th Qi point on the Foot-Taiyin-Spleen-Meridian (足太阴脾经) where the Spleen channel crosses over with the Kidney and Liver channels.

Stimulating Sanyinjiao point helps for abdominal pain, diarrhea, bloating, irregular and painful menstruation, uterine bleeding, insomnia, hypertension, and lower limb paralysis.

Qi Point: Yinlingquan (阴陵泉)

Yinlingquan point is on the inner side of the lower leg, in a depression formed by the medial condyle of the tibia, and the posterior border of the tibia, about 3 inches below the knee. It is the 9th Qi point on the Foot-Taiyin-Spleen-Meridian (足太阴脾经).

Stimulating Yinlingquan point helps for abdominal pain and distension, diarrhea, edema, dysuria, jaundice, and knee pain.

Qi Point: Xuehai (血海)

When the knee is flexed, Xuehai point is on the medial aspect of the thigh, about 2 inches to the upper border of the patella, in a tender depression on the bulge of the vastus medialis muscle. It is the 10th Qi point on the Foot-Taiyin-Spleen-Meridian (足太阴脾经).

Stimulating Xuehai point helps for irregular and painful menstruation, uterine bleeding, vastus medialis pain, and skin rash, irritation and infection.

Qi Point: Neiting (内庭)

Neiting point is on the top of the foot, near the base of the toes, and in the depression between the 2nd and 3rd metatarsal bones. Neiting point is on the Foot-Yangming-Stomach-Meridian (足阳明胃经).

Qi Points: Yingxiang (迎香)

Yingxiang points are in the naso-labial grooves at the midpoint of the outer edges of the nose, and are bilaterally symmetrical. Yingxiang points are located on the Hand-Yangming-Large-Intestine-Meridian (手阳明大肠经) and are the points of choice for all nasal disorders.

Stimulating Yingxiang points can help for nasal congestion, nosebleed, and mouth distortion.

Qi Points: Tinggong (听宫)

Tinggong points are symmetrically located anterior to the inner side of ears. If you open your mouth, you can find depressions formed in front of the inner ears. The Tinggong points are located inside the depressions. Tinggong points are on the Hand-Taiyang-Small-Intestine-Meridian (手太阳小肠经) and are useful for all ear related problems.

Stimulating Tinggong points helps for ear inflammation, tinnitus and hearing loss. It can also ease toothache.

Qi Points: Jiaosun (角孙)

Jiaosun points are directly above ear apexes within hairline, and are located on the Hand-Shaoyang-Triple Heater-Meridian (手少阳三焦经).

Stimulating Jiaosun points helps for headache, red eyes, sore throat and toothache.

Qi Points: Yifeng (翳风)

Yifeng points are located posterior to lobule of ear in depression between the mandible and mastoid process. They are located on the Hand-Shaoyang-Triple Heater-Meridian (手少阳三焦经).

Stimulating Yifeng points helps for ear problems including tinnitus, hearing loss, and cold induced acute earache.

Qi points on the backside of the Torso

Qi Points: Dazhui (大椎)

Dazhui point is on the backside of the torso. It is at the base of the neck along the center line of the body, in the depression below the spinous process of the seventh cervical vertebra. It is on the Du Channel (督脉), or the Governor Vessel Meridian.

Stimulating the Dazhui point can reduce pain and stiffness on neck and back areas. It is also helpful for cough, asthma, malaria and fever.

Qi Points: Mingme (命门)

Mingmen point is on the lower back along the spinal line, in the depression below the spinous process of the second lumbar vertebra. It is also on the Du Channel.

Stimulating Mingmen point eases back pain and back stiffness, helps for diarrhea, indigestion, and irregular menstruation.

Qi Points: Yaoyangguan (腰阳关)

Yaoyangguan point is another important Qi point on the Du Channel, located on the lower back along the spinal line, in the depression below the spinous process of the fourth lumbar vertebra.

Simulating Yaoyangguan point helps to ease back pain. It is also useful in assisting rehabilitation for lower limb paralysis.

Qi Points: Fengmen (风门)

Fengmen points are bilaterally symmetrical, about 1.5 inch away from the spinal line, on the level of the lower border of the spinous process of the 2nd thoracic vertebra. Fengmen points are located on the Foot-Taiyang-Urinary-Bladder-Meridian (足太阳膀胱经).

Stimulating Fengmen point helps for common cold, cough, fever, headache, dizziness, chest and back pain.

Qi Points: Feishu (肺俞)

Feishu points are bilaterally symmetrical, about 1.5 inch away from the spinal line, on the level of the lower border of the spinous process of the 3rd thoracic vertebra. Feishu points are located on the Foot-Taiyang-Urinary-Bladder-Meridian (足太阳膀胱经).

Stimulating Feishu point helps for cough, asthma, hot fashes, night sweats and nasal congestion.

Qi Points: Weishu (胃俞)

Weishu points are bilaterally symmetrical, about 1.5 inch away from the spinal line, on the level of the lower border of the spinous process of the 12th thoracic vertebra. Weishu points are located on the Foot-Taiyang-Urinary-Bladder-Meridian (足太阳膀胱经).

Stimulating Weishu point helps for epigastric pain, abdominal distension, and vomiting.

Qi Points: Shenshu (肾俞)

Shenshu points are bilaterally symmetrical, about 1.5 inch away from the spinal line, on the level of the lower border of the spinous process of the 2nd lumbar vertebra. Shenshu points are located on the Foot-Taiyang-Urinary-Bladder-Meridian (足太阳膀胱经).

Stimulating Shenshu point helps for urination problems, irregular menstruation, reproductive system disorders, back pain, dizziness, tinnitus, and hearing loss.

Qi Points: Zhibian (秩边)

Zhibian points are bilaterally symmetrical, on the level of the 4th posterior sacral foramen, about 3 inch lateral to the median sacral crest. Zhibian points are located on the Foot-Taiyang-Urinary-Bladder-Meridian (足太阳膀胱经).

Stimulating Zhibian point helps for lumbosacral pain, lower limb paralysis, vaginal pain, hemorrhoids, constipation and urination difficulty.

Qi Points: Huantiao (环跳)

Huantiao points are symmetrically located on the lateral side of thigh, at the junction between the medial two-thirds and the lateral one-third of a line connecting the greater trochanter and the sacral hiatus. Huantiao point belongs to the Foot-Shaoyang-gall-bladder Meridian (足少阳胆经).

Stimulating Huantiao point eases pain in hip and leg areas.

When I was asked to write about this topic I hesitated, because I do not have first-hand weight loss experience. I have always kept a stable and healthy body weight even after gave birth to my son. When being asked about the “secret” of weight control, my answer used to be “Hmm…well, I am Asian.” But I cannot ignore the fact that with the spreading of fast food into Asian countries, overweight and obesity have rapidly increased in Asian population. Having a good gene helps, but it does not mean you are automatically exempted from overweight, obesity, and other related problems.

When I was a child, I had a very weak and sensitive digesting system. I remember my mother always gave me a cup of hot green tea to calm down my upset stomach. Because of my weak stomach, I learned to be careful about what to put into my mouth, not overeating, and listen to my body. Eventually I grew out of the problem. To me, besides all other benefits, one of the most important and practical function of tea is cleansing. If I have something greasy and heavy I will have a cup of hot green tea to wash it down. Whatever is not good or too much for my body, I want it out of my system fast. Drink water can also do that but green tea has something extra, that is the power of breakdown grease. My grandma used to collect tea leaves after infusion and used them for kitchen ware cleaning.

I believe human body has a superb self-regulation mechanism. It does not take in everything we eat but keeps a balance between intake and output. Our body regularly expels and burns those extra food. However, the balance point can be shifted if you keep pushing it. After all you are the master of your body. Bad diet and lack of exercise will cause fat deposition, waste accumulation and solidifying in our colon system, and thus breakdown the self-regulation function of our body. Cleansing is important for our body to function normally. Green tea and high fiber diet are good for that.

From weight loss point of view, it is a simple math, ether to reduce calorie intake or increase energy consumption. Anyone who reads the food labels and goes to gym knows that it is easy to have extra calorie intake and very hard to burn it off. Tea has zero calorie without milk and sugar. Simply switching from Soda to tea can significantly reduce daily calorie intake and lead to weight loss. It has also been reported that green tea contains catechin polyphenols, which can raise metabolic rate and burn extra calories.

Tea is not a quick treatment for overweight. It is a component of a healthy lifestyle. I drink tea for the appreciation of its aroma and taste; I drink tea to enjoy a calm and peaceful moment; and I drink tea for comfort when my body gets upset. Does tea drinking has something to do with my stable and healthy body weight? I am sure it does but it cannot do it alone. I always have a balanced diet with a lot of vegetables and exercise regularly.

A few tips for people get into a green tea weight loss program:

Do not expect dramatic weight loss effect but learn to appreciate tea and make it part of you lifestyle

If you are caffeine sensitive do not drink strong tea late in evening

Do not drink strong tea with empty stomach as it could upset your stomach

Select good quality loose-leaf tea, it taste great

The famous list of “Top Ten Chinese Teas” started at PPIE, the Panama-Pacific International Exposition. Since then the list varies over the years but West Lake Dragon Well, also known as Longjing (龙井, means Dragon’s well in Chinese), is always on the top of the list. This tea has a pretty impressive fan base. The original eighteen Dragon Well tea bushes in Shifeng Mountain (石峰) of the city of Hangzhou (杭州) were named by Emperor Qianlong (乾隆) of Qin Dynasty (清朝) as Royal Tea. Over the generations, Dragon Well tea has been presented as a tribute to many Chinese emperors. Its vegetative aroma, mellow chestnut flavor, the distinctive flat sword shape, and the jade color of its liquor are well loved by the tea-drinking communities… Read the full article

Green tea from the Chinese village of Dragon Well (Lung Ching in local parlance). Dragon Well tea has a distinguished shape. Its leaves are broad and flat, a result of laborious drying. There is something to show for this hard work: Dragon Well tea is refreshingly smooth, sweet and delicate, among the very best of Chinese greens. Our “Dragon Well Requiem” is a First Grade version of this truly sublime tea.
